SAVE THE STOURPORT CIVIC
In October 2022, The Stourport Civic have found their future as an arts venue under
threat with Stourport’s Council opening up the leasehold of the Civic Hall to other
groups and organisations ahead of the Civic’s lease renewal in December 2022.
Built in the mid-1960s the Stourport Civic, a fine example of brutalist architecture,
quickly established its reputation as the lynchpin of the local community. Today, the
Civic is one of the primary cultural facilities in the Wyre Forest Area, holding in
excess of 270 events each year. The arts venue plays a crucial role in the town as
the cultural hub for families and friends to come together in addition to encouraging
visitors to the town.
One of the main objectives and responsibilities of the local council is to ensure that
community assets are properly used for the benefit of the community and
at a suitable return for the benefit of community funds.
Well, it seems crystal clear that nothing demonstrates this more than the Stourport
Civic. The Civic represents so much more than a building. The Stourport Civic that we
know and love today is a forward-thinking and thriving arts and cultural venue. It is
an outlet for social gatherings, professional networking, family celebrations,
creativity, exhibitions, charity fundraising but above all it brings the people of the
Stourport community together.
